Mr Gekko Bets Explained

The Mr Gekko Bets Premium Service offers football tips throughout the English and Scottish football season.  The service is named after the SBC analyst 'Mr Gekko' who has developed this product and who leads its operation, sending out selections generated by the system each week.

The system itself is based upon the strong football ratings that are put together by the well known Winabobatoo service. By utilising these exclusively licensed raw ratings, Mr Gekko developed a system of selecting value football bets that form the basis of the service.

By utilising the raw football ratings provided by the Winabobatoo service, he has developed a system of selecting football bets, which he shares to members of MGB. This has been fully tested live and tracked historically to prove the long-term edge on offer.

Through continuous monitoring of the football markets, Mr Gekko will also be able to provide advice on the best possible time to place these football bets.

As a subscriber to MGB you will receive each of these bets via email alongside advice on which bookmaker to place it with throughout the football season.

If you are not familiar with this service then do check out our Frequently Asked Questions page, which should answer any queries you have.

How Mr Gekko Spots Value

To help explain further how MGB works and the edge that it looks to take advantage of, Mr Gekko had this to say...

“My system aims to identify the games where bookies have made their biggest mistakes in pricing up their books. This means that the selection process centres around identifying the teams where the returns should theoretically prove to be highest to the investor, based on the degree of bookie generosity on offer compared to where the fair odds should be.

I have imposed a threshold limit to identify only the most profitable of opportunities, with a substantial margin of safety built in to ensure that results should have a minimal chance of being down to luck. On top of this, there are certain types of games where apparent mispricings are actually false dawns and should be avoided at all costs, despite appearing to offer value at first glance. As any half decent goalkeeper would tell you, keeping the ball out of your own net is almost as important as scoring at the other end, which in our example relates to knowing which bets not to take.

The selections that pass my test should theoretically be amongst the most profitable selections out there and these are the picks that I will be betting on personally as well as providing them for Gekko Bets subscribers. Furthermore, I will be monitoring the prices of odds on offer for over 24 hours before issuing my picks, which will give you the advantage of allowing me to notify you when you should place your bets early and when patience is most likely to be rewarded. Odds can improve greatly after the public money starts weighing on one side of the see-saw and it is very important to recognise and take advantage of this.”

Historical Performance

We can also have confidence in MGB, due to the solid performance viewed when viewing how it shaped up over the past four year period.

Mr Gekko has this to say about how why we believe this system to be so sturdy thanks to the historical analysis...

“I originally developed my system by accident after testing whether Winabob ratings had worked as a whole, above and beyond just the main picks. I did this a few months into last season, because I was concerned that the recommended picks had lost money.

In carrying out a thorough analysis, I backtested all possible Winabob data (about 8000 games at the time, each with 3 outcomes, so 24,000 data points). The result was ultimately that Winabobatoo did have a consistent edge, despite the weaker performance of the recommended picks. Through continuing to analyse my results, I dug deeper and found that I may have identified a certain type of condition where a 10% ROI should be consistently achievable. I backtested this rule and confirmed that the results were strongly in line with my expectations.

I believe that the system should be consistent in generating solid returns over the course of the season, not because I am doing anything super fancy as such, but more because the Winabobatoo number crunching has proven to have an edge over the bookies in the 10,000 games that have been rated to members since 2006/2007.

I have found a successful way to use the ratings to get a consistent profit that should theoretically always be available so long as Mike Lindley is still able to maintain his edge over the bookies. Anyone following Winabobatoo last season will know that despite the recommended picks failing as a group, if you were to bet on every single ‘positive value’ game last season you would have made consistent profits throughout the season.

My system takes this positive value approach to a higher level, aiming to pump up results further still through my expertise in analysing the data and identifying what should be the most profitable of opportunities going forwards.”

Performance Details

MGB is based upon the raw ratings that Winabobatoo provides and as such we have been able to successfully track its performance historically.

Between February and May 2010 we also began testing live the bets that MGB produced. During this time we saw over 300 live results from this approach, which we followed with our own money to test its practicality.

Below you can see a table of performance and graph that illustrates what would have been achieved if following over the past four seasons. This includes historical performance between 8th September 2006 and 15th Feb 2010 and then our own live results between 16th Feb 2010 and 9th May 2010.

In the above graph and table, the results up until February 16th are based on the odds available at the time of the Winabobatoo magazine going out. However, as our live bets vs mag odds graph shows below, we expect these historical odds to understate the potential returns.

Live Testing Results

The results generated in our live testing helped to illustrate one of the benefits of the market monitoring that Mr Gekko employs as many more value bets qualify with his method than by using Winabobatoo's advised odds.

This is due primarily to odds that drift following the release of the Winabobatoo magazine as very often some substantial differences in price can be seen.

For example for all weekend games, Winabobatoo release their magazine bets at Thursday lunchtime. Mr Gekko will supply his advice for all these games on Friday Evening and Saturday Morning. Very often during this period between Thursday 12pm and Friday 6.30pm, some major price changes have taken place.

To help illustrate this better, look at the higher number of bets (and the pts profit generated) by Mr Gekko's method in comparison with taking bets at the release of the Winabobatoo magazine.

What To Expect As A Member

MGB is primarily a long-term profitable service and as such we look to achieve a profit over the course of a full season. Historically the performance in each full season has been very good but there have been shorter-term periods of under-performance that you should be aware of.

Setting Expectations

By analysing the historical results, the worst case scenario was as follows between the 22nd Sep 2007 and the 8th Dec 2007, where a drawdown of 36.03 pts was seen.

There have also been a number of other drawdowns of around 20 pts during the four seasons we have backtested, so its worth being aware of the losing runs that can kick in from time to time.

It is for this reason that we recommend that those join do so with a commitment to follow for a full season and are aware of the likelihood of losing runs.

Our recommendation for a betting bank is 75 pts, therefore by working to such a bank, you should be more than adequately covered to minimise the impact of losing runs and maximise winning runs.

High Turnover Service

Due to the value methods employed, its fair to say that MGB is fairly high turnover service. That is to say there are a fair amount of bets each week.

Dependent upon the amount of football fixtures in any given period of time, you can therefore expect between 15 to 25 bets in an average week. Do bear in mind though that these bets will be sent in batches during the various time windows for supply each week. You will not receive 20 bets in one go! Instead you may receive perhaps five bets on four different occasions each week.

We appreciate that this high level of turnover will mean that MGB is not suitable for everyone. For those of you that like a high turnover service, then MGB offers an attractive amount of bets.
