Equine Investments is a service that has been mentioned occasionally on our forum and in despatches with members and others in the betting world.
We have been a paid-for member for a little while now, taking in the service over the past few months, in order to judge their offering for ourselves.
What we have uncovered is an excellent service although perhaps only one for those with the correct professional attitude and ability to get on bets quickly.
SERVICE IN DETAIL
Equine Investments is run by 2 individuals, Laurence Lambourn and his associate Tim, who are both full-time professional gamblers.
The service is now in its 5th year of operation and each year so far has shown a sizeable profit and a return on your investment of between 25% and 50%.
They supply horse racing advice via email and text message 7 days a week as necessary. In addition you can also call a national rate phone number to which all members are supplied a special PIN to utilise this. They work for the majority of the year from May 1 st to around the third week of October and then from December 1st until around mid-March. This means they are in operation for around 40 weeks a year.
Each day you receive a morning email at exactly 10.20am that either details any early bets or advises as to further emails and an exact time to receive the next update. This means you can prepare to place your bet at a pre-advised time. Dependent upon the days betting you may be asked to expect an update at 12.30 with a bet. Very often any bets will be in by 1.30pm at the very latest with the majority supplied in the morning or midday.
Saturdays can be quite busy with lots of races and they often send through an early message at 8.20am. Similarly when there is Sunday racing, you will also receive a 10.20am message and potentially a number of bets.
Most bets also come with an explanation and reasoning behind its selection.
All advice and emails are supplied in a professional manner and we have never experienced problems in delivery or a delayed service.
Proofing wise we have been monitoring for some time as a paid for client. In addition they also proof to a number of other sources. All advice has been proofed to Greg Gordon at the recommended www.progambler.co.uk website.
We have been discussing EI with Greg from Progambler and he is of the same opinion as us. Read his own in-depth review at http://www.progambler.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=224&Itemid=2 . His review was based upon monitoring them for the past 10 months prior to May, so in addition to our own monitoring we have over 15 months of personally verified performance.
A downside of the service has to be the cost, which some of you may feel prohibitive. EI keep the number of members low to help protect prices for all subscribers. A full year of EI will set you back £1295. Alternatively the flat season (May to October) is £895 where the all weather season (Nov to March) is only £495. There is also a 30 points level stakes guarantee with every annual membership.
THE ADVICE
All bets come through in a simple format, advising you to back to win or each way and the staking itself. Staking on bets can vary between usually 3 and 5 pts, with different amounts as and when they feel necessary. They will vary stakes dependent upon the time of the year and the confidence behind each bet.
Prices for bets are usually very good and the majority of bets will be at least 5/1 and over. It is common to see bets advised as large as 25/1 although usually no bigger.
Without exception you should always take the best price that EI suggest at the time of advice. We discuss this in more depth later on but EI prices do get swallowed up very quickly and its very important you can get on as soon as possible.
When a large number of bets are at bigger prices, then the strike rate naturally has to be expected to be lower than usual. If you are backing a 12/1 shot, 5 pts to win, you don't need many at those odds to win to show a profit. An expected strike rate long-term is around the 20% marker so roughly 1 in every 5 bets will win.
EI arrive at all their bets in a manner similar to other professionals, in that they look for value propositions. Rather than us explaining let us quote from their website itself
“Whats our ‘key' to consistent profits?. The answer really is very simple, VALUE . You can only win at this game in the long term if your horses odds are greater than their true chance of winning. We wouldn't take 10/11 about the toss of a coin being heads, the same as we wouldn't take 7/1 about a horse we feel has a 10% chance of winning (9/1). Finding value isn't easy mind you, it takes a lot of hard work.
If we are interested in a particular horse in a race, we would have to come up with a price of every single runner in that race and make our ‘book' to 100% (ie no over-round or bookmakers profit built in).
Lets say that we calculate the true chances of our horse winning at 20% (4/1). Now we need to add on our profit margin of at least 25% to ensure that we are getting value, using 25% allows us some scope for error - this brings the minimum price we require to 5/1, if we can get 5/1 or better then it's a bet, if not, we'll leave it well alone and look for something else”
PROFITS & PRACTICALITY
What is without doubt is that EI advice will make you a profit over a long-term period. There are peaks and troughs of profit and loss and you have to be able to sustain losing runs of note but the long-term bottom line is profit.
We have made good returns throughout our period with EI and are happy to report excellent profits can be made. The returns are in line with what is being claimed by the service online.
As a new subscriber we suffered a poor start in our first month though and it took over a month to show a profit and peg back a decent sized loss. A good run of winners rewarded our patience and profits have continued to rise over time. As with all forms of betting, sensible expectations are needed and over a full season of advice you will make a return even if one month makes a loss.
Return On Investment will vary but you can expect perhaps 20% as a minimum return. You will most certainly need to operate a betting bank for this service and to make a return well over and above the cost of membership you need to be able to back their bets to decent stakes. If you are likely to feel uneasy operating a betting bank of over £3000 and placing over £100 on a bet then perhaps not for you. Losing runs of 10 bets plus is not uncommon so at £100 a bet that could be £1000 down.
We have heard some bemoan the returns on offer from EI are not achievable. Well that will be true if you are late getting on your bets as the prices do get backed in after EI advise a bet.
Regularly they will advise a bet at perhaps 20/1. Within 5 minutes this price will have gone and 18/1 is on offer. 5 minutes later this is now 16/1 and within 40 minutes the best price on offer is 12/1. The horse goes on to start at 10/1 SP and EI have effectively halved its price.
Most of their bets follow a similar pattern, however you can be sure that there is real money following their advice and lots of confidence behind their bets.
Clearly the key is to be able to place your bet quickly. This means one thing, being able to place the bets as soon as they come in. EI do notify you of when you can expect an update so you can prepare to get on.
These are definite requirements of anyone who wants to make money with them.
Ability to place all bets when they come in quickly. Within 5 minutes of receiving the bet on a regular basis. Preferably within the first 60 seconds to ensure you get the best price.
Have an active account with all the major bookmakers.
Clearly it is a service not for everyone and we make no bones about this. Before joining this service you must be prepared for what to expect.
MEMBERSHIPS
Their membership base is very loyal and the majority of subscribers are professional gamblers who have quick and regular access to the Internet and can get the prices on offer. There is not much turnover in members so you will not see EI advertise anywhere as they don't need to.
They operate to a certain number of members and once that quota is full they do not offer further subscriptions to others. This is to protect prices and is a sensible precaution.
At this time there are no spaces in the service (Correct at the time of writing in September 2007 although membership spaces are available now until 26th April 2008) although this may well change when the all weather season starts at the beginning of October. Our recommendation is that if you are serious about joining you contact them and ask to be placed upon their waiting list.
CONCLUSIONS
Unlike other services that make profits via early priced bets, EI are realistic in what they offer. There is no claiming unlikely returns or advising 5/2 bets each way and it is an extremely professional outfit.
We can say that if you can get on their bets for the most part within a few minutes then you will make good returns. That's not a guess, it's the truth as set out by our betting statements.
It is most definitely not for everyone, indeed you do need to weigh up properly whether you can fit in the service into your own lifestyle.
However if you have the time and ability to place the bets at the advised prices then you will make excellent returns and it's a service that should be in your portfolio without a doubt.
We will continue to follow Equine Investments as professional gamblers and are happy to recommend it into our Hall of Fame.
Its not for the faint-hearted or pushed for time so be very sure about what you are doing before you join especially considering the membership costs.
